My Magic Box Over the last several years I have tried to cut down on the clutter in my fly boxes and to reduce the number of boxes themselves. I have managed to corral all of my daily fishing flies into my four-tier Richardson chest box. The first three tiers are filled with my general, all-purpose patterns. These patterns are designed to imitate several different insects in various stages of development. The inhabitants of tray one through three are my everyday, all season “go to” flies that I seldom change, only augment as needed. Included in this selection are:
Dry flies Adams - sizes 12 through 22, parachute style or traditional in several colors Stimulator - sizes 6 through 10 in orange or yellow Mahogany spinner - sizes 12 through 22. Ants and Beetles in various sizes.
Nymphs Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear - sizes 8 through 20 in natural, red brown, brown, olive and cream. Egg patterns San Juan worms Green Weenie LaFontaine caddis pupa - sizes 14 through 20
Streamers Woolly Buggers - sizes 2 through 10 Grey Ghost - sizes 8 through 10
Wet flies Soft hackle flies tied with hare’s ear, peacock and olive fur in assorted sizes.
The fourth tray is populated with what I refer to as hatch specific flies, that is, flies that are designed to represent a specific insect. I might tie several patterns to represent the Hendrickson hatch such as the Red Quill, the Hendrickson Thorax light and the light Hendrickson Dun. This tier of the box is constantly under revision. |
