I happened onto the Casting For Recovery website last night and after reading about what they are doing I created a fly tying challenge on the CFFA's web site. Quote is from my writeup there:
Maybe you have to much time on you hand this winter, tie a couple of flies and send them to casting for recovery.
I just happened to find this writeup on CFR's website. I don't think anyone will object on me posting it here...
If you bring your donated flies to the March, April or May club meeting I'll add you to the drawing for a free guided kayak fly fishing tour 1/2 or full day (day or night trip - your choice). Bring your fly rod and I'll bring the rest for the trip...
You can bring 1 fly or as many as you like, I'll add everyones name who donate a fly to the hat and the drawing will be at the May member meeting. We will mail the flies as a donation "From the members of the Connecticut Fly Fisherman's Association". I'll donate the kayaks and my time. If we receive flies from individuals that are not CFFA members we will add their names to list of donators. If you are a member of another fly fishing club, join in the challenge and we'll add your club to the list of donators. Anyone donating will be added drawing - just let me who you are.
Are you ready to tie, I have the specifics here... (http://www.ctflyfish.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=283&st=0&#entry837)

If we get enough tiers we can make the matched boxes, that requires each tier to make 15 identical flies. and at least 10 tiers for each boxed set...
Anyone here who have a connection to a fly store or fly supplier? We are going to need the boxes to put them in. I'll check the catalog at our store to see if I can order them.

I would be honored to do so. Just let me know what flies you need.
The only problem, I have never tied 2 identical flies in my life.lol

No two flies are alike, just like us humans. We may look alike but are still different. So flies on the same pattern will suffice.
Instead of putting the same post on different forums I have the whole writeup on CFFA's website. Link in my first post.

Nils...I can make them almost identical. I'll check with some of the other tiers I know and see if I can generate some support for this.
Excellent cause!

What you are doing is such a selfless act, you should be applauded.
I tried to post on the other site, but I found it a bit difficult. According
to what I saw there, wooleybuggers are needed, so I will volunteer to
make fifteen of those, if you don't mind. And, to make it more interresting, I will donate $2.00 for every entry that comes from this site.
Maybe it will help with buying the boxes you need.

Howie,
I saw you online as "wooleybugger" and I didn't realize you had a problem posting! Can you let me know what the problem was?
And thank you for the matching donation toward the fly boxes. I'll post the fly list here:
If you are interested in contributing flies to CFR, see the list below.
FLIES NEEDED:
For fishing - Bead-head Nymphs (sizes 10, 12); Attractor Dry Flies (sizes 8-12); Terrestrials (sizes 10, 12); Wooly Buggers (lightly weighted, sizes 6, 8); Parachute Adams (sizes 10,12)
For fundraising - Special Flies or Collections (by exceptional tiers)
For participants - Put together a box of flies for each participant, each with an assortment of 6-12 flies. There are 14 participants at each retreat.
For prize drawings at the retreats - put together a box of flies for one lucky participant.
If you have already sent a donation of flies directly, PM me and I'll add you to the drawing. I'll take you on your word since I know we all tell fish tales, but we never lie about the truth.

Nilc...
This is a great and generous idea!! My wife has been involved with CFR for 7 or 8 years an an "on stream instructor" and a casting instructor.
She traveled over the country for them as volunteer at her own expense. These are very emotional experiences for her even though she has not had the disease. These women need all the inspiration that they can get as they fight this terrible sickness!!! Any help that CFR recieves is greatly appreciated., especially by the ladies who are chosen to attend the retreats.

hacklehouse,
thank you and you are a lucky man. Kudos to your wife for doing the instructor part. I see that a lot of clubs have the same or similar ideas from reading other club newsletters.
I received a couple of emails from people who are not fly tyers, asking what they could do... Money, need money to buy the fly boxes. If you have a pull somewhere that will sell them to us for a good price or I can get fly boxes through Angler Sport Group and they do logo imprint etc.
Any of you tyers that create a special fly, donate it to the fund raising or prize drawing at their retreat. every fly helps. If you only have time for 1 and another 100 people have time for the same we end up with a 100 fly's. I don't know how to tie but I'm going to try my best this weekend... (don't expect pictures or OTW reviews)
Just tell me you donated and I'll add your name in the hat for the guided kayak fishing drawing. If you don't have fly gear for the salt we have it at the store that you can use.

Sorry it took me so long updating this post.
I have received fly donations from SRRA (flyaddict) members H. Ridley and Shawn Martin. Thank you to both of you.
I have a running list and tally at the CFFA website of donators and remember you are entered in the kayak fishing tour (saltwater) :)
Keep your donations coming, I know the ladies appreciate it. I talked to a few of the volunteers this weekend and they are working hard to keep the retreats open and not have to cancel any of them.
