Hi everyone,

I hear a lot of people talking about winter/summer caddis on the Farmington. Does anyone know the patterns for tying these flies? I have Ames' book but there's nothing in there, and I can't seem to find anything online.

Thanks

Greg

I believe there is a pattern in Ames' book for the very popular foam caddis pupa used for this hatch. It's not specifically listed as a winter/summer caddis species, but it appears in the discussion of another caddis species. You have to read the text, and it makes specific mention of the Farmington river and that pattern. I can't find my copy of the book to give you more specifics, but go back and check and I think you'll find it.

Greg,

Check out pgs 156 and 157 in Tom Ame's book. I think that's what you are looking for.

Thanks for the info. I checked out the book and I found the correct patterns. I hope it works.

Grady (troutfitter) can hook you up with those flies at Upcountry as well as Dave Goulet at Classic and Custom Fly Shop. Good luck! :)

Holy thread bump, Batman! :-)

I would like to try a wet by the name of the Starling and Herl this year to match this hatch. Don't know if it would work, but I suspect it might. The pattern is just as its name suggests: peacock herl body with a soft hackle of starling.
