Buzzing! I just googled and found that a new work is on its way and available for pre-order. "Fool's Paradise".

Yippeee!! [I really must drink less coffee at work]

(16 bucks on Amazon, btw)

Have never read any of his stuff. I am assuming you are a big fan?

Rats. All this talk makes me so depressed that I haven't done squat on my book in a long, long time. I guess once winter gets here it'll go on the front-burner again.

Geez, I haven't even done a new article in months. I have three works-in-progress right now. My BI/Early Season Striper article is about 3/4 done. Will try to finish it this weekend. Photos, too! :-)

1. yep, I think he's a superb writer who writes what i like - stories about life happening whilst fishing. PM me if you would like to borrow a book or two. Or your library should hold the odd copy.

2. yep, get your finger out fisherman!

Thanks for the heads up. He's a great writer.

By the way, if you like fishing literature, one of the best books I've ever read (but is not widely known) is called "The Angler's Coast", by Russell Chatham. It's not about fishing that I'm particularly familiar with (mostly California salmon, steelhead, and stripers) but I just really like the writing, and the pictures. If you're the type that gets nostalgic by old black and white fishing photos, and good fishing stories, you'd like the book. He seems to convey the feeling of being there, but at the same time, always in an understated way. He's a painter first, not an author, but he's written a handful of books.

His stories are engaging and pleasant to read.

Great! Love his books. Always gave me a good laugh. I have his books listed in the book shop. Not sure if I have all of them.

While we are on the topic of books...took down my copy of "A River Runs Through It" last night...what a great read. If you haven't had a chance to read it...do so.

Yes, a wonderful book, and not a half bad film. I also like Mclean's other short stories - Logging and Pimping and Your Pal Jim is a good one (i think part of the RRTI text).

Currently reading James Proseck's Fly-fishing the 41st, though I've made it to p70 and haven't been taken fly-fishing yet... good read though; again, more about life/travel than "how to".

which one are you missing?

trouter203

it isn't so much that i am missing it, as i don't think it interests me. doesn't he have a book about fishing bamboo or something?
if you tell me it is less instructional and more story telling, then i will buy it. but based on the title, i always thought it would not interest me.

Put it this way, I don't own a cane rod and have no plans to own one, but I liked the book - it has all the usual sarcasm and wit, so yes, I think it's worth a read. It gives the history of fly rods, which I found interesting if nothing else.

Rather than part with your hard earned, PM me and I'll loan it to you?

Don't mean to come across negative, but if you've read his first three books and/or any of his columns you might not be surprised with this book. He seems to repeat/rerun his columns and stories from earlier works --- and he doesn't seem to be as creative since he stopped drinking.

Just one man's take - hope I am wrong.

I have almost all of his works and like them in general, but I wait a couple months after release and I can usually find them in the used\other section on Amazon or elsewhere and not pay full retail (I'm a cheap b*****d just like the author...). If you can wait a bit for most books in general you can save a lot of money by not buying them when they first come out. Hey, Gierach prides himself on being cheap already, so this should not be surprising behavior for him...

kirk, thanks for the offer. i will probably just buy it though. looks like they are rereleasing it now.
bob, i had no idea that he was even a drinker. i have noticed that his earlier works were a bit more entertaining than the latter. i think people think i am more funny when i drink as well.........

He makes references to drinking in some of his books, and again in later books of not drinking anymore.
Either way, I find him as an entertaining writer.
His fishing bamboo book is a good reference for bamboo rodsas it gives a bit of history on some of the "trade rods" vs higher end rod makers. Well worth reading.
