View Full Version : Steelhead fishing with no rain

Well, Saturday morning, I leave for a week-long trip to fish Erie tribs for steelhead, and maybe the occasional stray brown. It's going to be mighty interesting, because they haven't gotten any rain up there either. Having seen pics of the rivers there on some other sites, it's not looking good. If they don't get any rain, we may end up moving base from Erie to Pulaski or Oak Orchard. I guess catching some salmon is better than catching no steelhead. At least I can look forward to the nightly post-fishing card games and drinking spree. Some things just don't change.

Catch, It looks like the Catt is the only game in town on the Erie tribs right now. But I have seen some nice fish come out of there already this year. Let us know how you did. I'll be heading there in a couple weeks. Lets hope for some rain. And good luck.:)

Just returned from Pulaski. Catch...I saw more steel in the water and on stringers than I have in many years. The low water is bringing out the worst in some people and the very best in others. As always Pulaski is an adventure. There is steel in the salmon river. May be a decent alternative for you.

Flyone73,
Somehow I managed not to mention that we plan on starting with the lower Catt if they don't get enough rain in the PA tribs today or tommorrow. I hate fishing on the reservation, because vehicle break-ins are so prevalent there. But, if it's where the action is, that's where we will go.

Headhunter,
Thanks for the info on steel in Pulaski. I hate the crowds, and their behavior there, but if there is steel to be had, hmmmm.....

I agree with the crowds sentiment...but the dsr may be worth a look.

Lower Black Hole...packed but saw plenty of chrome.

Also a couple of spots that I would be willing to PM to you.

It is getting late in the season for the salmon crowd....you may be alright up there.

I'd like to try to get up there the first week of November, but don't know if time and money will allow.... I'll be interested in your report.

Last time I fished Erie tribs was November 2003. Water was high, and the Catt and 18 mile were both blown out, so we fished smaller creeks with some limited success. I'd actually welcome the lower levels if I could fish the Catt, and there are fish..... Pulaski could also be doable but I share the sentiments about the crowds and antics....

Best of luck!

Jim
