As many of you might know, last Friday there was a fatal accident near the I-95/I-395 interchange in East Lyme involving tanker carrying diesel fuel.
What you might not know is 5000 gallons of the fuel were spilled into Latimer Brook.
Latimer Brook is one of the cornerstones of the state sea-run trout program.
Before the more recent efforts, there was a sea-run program in the 70s that was abandoned due to lack of success.
Latimers was one of the few, if not the only, stream in the program where the sea-runs held on

that is terrible, hopefully they can remove some of the diesel and contain the spill from further damaging the river. By the way, there are other streams that consistently produce sea runs, i know several people that take browns up to five pounds from the far mill river in shelton.

It is bad. The Sea Run population returns to spawn around December. If the deisel does not flush out of the system the fear is the fish won't return. The fish come up the Niantic River and spawn in two streams one which is Latimers. The fish trace their way home and are sensitive to the water quality up to only a few parts per billion. The deisel that soaked into the ground it could continue to leach into the river for a long time.
