Hatchery eggs, fish stock to be destroyed
The US Fish and Wildlife Service announced that this year's production of Atlantic salmon eggs at facilities in Massachusetts and Vermont will have to be destroyed because a virus was detected. The brood stock, or fish used for breeding purposes, also will be destroyed. Pancreatic necrosis was first discovered at Richard Cronin National Salmon Station in Sunderland. The virus cannot be contracted by humans. Jaime Geiger, assistant regional director of fisheries for the federal agency, said that in addition to those at the Sunderland facility, eggs being incubated at a hatchery in Bethel, Vt., also will be destroyed. The virus reportedly was introduced by infected wild salmon that had returned to the Connecticut River from the Atlantic Ocean. (AP)"

Bobby,

I believe that most of our broodstock fish come from the Kensington CT hatchery. I have not heard of any such issues there. Sorry to hear about this problem in the other hatcheries. Thanks for posting this.

I am also! This entire restoration is walking a fine line one fall and it could be over. We will never get the chance again to restor Atlantic salmon.

According to the biologist at the Nashua USFWS hatchery there is no sign of the virus in the Nashua, NH or Maine facilities, only those in the CT River watershed.
