Bird fur is a feather and pruduct distributed by Whiting Farms. The feather was primarily tailored to the spey fly tier in replace of Heron. Great stuff, moves and breathes like a champ. I can answer any questions you may have on tying and fishing the fly. It is a killer streamer and is very easy to tie. It doesnt look like much but once you fish a few times you will see why it is so effective. Enjoy.....

Congrats Rich, thats a pretty significant accomplishment. Now that it's no longer secret, is there a way to read the article online somewhere?

Well, it might be online when it gets closer to January, they still have the last issue online. The magazine is in all the shops now.

CONGRATS! Wow, I'm impressed! :)
Maybe you can teach me a thing or three about streamer fishing. I've caught fish on streamers, but don't really work at it.... I consider myself proficient at dries, improving with nymphs, but don't do much with streamers or wets.....
Published in Flyfisherman! WOW! :)
And to think... we knew you when.... ;)

Slo,
Just wanted to say hi, havent seen you much this year, we never got out in the boat this year. Have to make up for that next season.
As for the fly, I have something in the works with a fly company, that pattern and a few more I concocted as well, when I get a definitive response on that I will let you know, things look bright on that endeavor, wish me luck.
Patriot, as for the fly, it has taken over a dozen species of fish for me, from smallies to pike, to northwoods maine brookies, even Stripers.....(even though after a fish or two the fly was pretty well mangled). The streamer is at its best with trout and smallies though. Some close friends and fellow flyaddicts from out west have tested the fly on some pretty pressured, non streamer type rivers and done very well, as well as on the Delaware system under less than desireable streamer conditions. The proofs in the pudding, it works, and is a cinch to tie. I may be doing some tying clinics over the winter and that fly has been a hot topic, I will let you know about that at a later date. That fly has produced under all conditions, it isnt a fly that doesnt have any experience behind it. Lots of onstream trial and error, I have taken trout on that thing every month of the year, and it can be deadly in the winter swung through the guts of pools. I even tie some of them on tubes for the great lakes and they work great. That material has also spawned some fantastic night fishing patterns that have put some real slobs in the net over the past year or two.
Aaron from Troutpredator took a 10+ pound brown fishing at night in Pennsylvania with that fly in black..... That should be proof in and of itself that the fly works. Good luck cheers.

Yes, I believe it is. Just look at the teeth on that fish too, a true carnivore,
Massachusetts.

Sounds great, its been a busy year at work, I hope to fish a lot more next spring - maybe even some before then. Havin to work for a livin really sucks sometimes

Good luck. Let me know when you do, I'll take a couple dozen of each color.

Thank you for the kind words about TPO, I was there for the catch and the fly was certainly working well that night.

Is it a brookie, or a laker? It looks alot like some of the lake trout I've caught in New Hampshire, and if it was caught in Mass, it could be a laker from Quabbin or one of the other resevoirs or lakes that have lake trout. Just curious. The head, snout, and color looks more like a laker than a brookie, but big brookies often look much different. It's clearly a char, that much is obvious...
Great pics!

It is a Brookie, caught in the Deerfield, by the railroad tracks.
