View Full Version : Opinions on a few rods I'm thinking of...

I was thinking about finally splurging for a high quality trout rod. I was looking at the Sage Fli 9-1/2 foot 5 weight. It's that burnt orange rod. I mostly fish nymphs that's why I'm interested in the longer model.
Also looking at getting a 7 weight TFO lefty kreh prof series (the $150 model). I want to use that for smallmouth on the hous and maybe for light saltwater once in a while.
Anybody have any opinions on these rods? I'd appreciate hearing a little feedback. Thanks in advance

The burnt orange would go great with the pink miata!
No seriously, the TFO is a great rod for the money. Now stop being a cheapskate and buy a Winston! You won't regret it.

I was looking at the TFO because I didn't want to spend a lot on something I would only use a few months a year. I really just want it for smallmouth, and I don't have anything close to a 7 weight.

Oh, thought you were gonna replace that dilapidated rod you have now. Well, do you need a 5 or a 7 wt? What exactly is it that you want, a high qualty rod or a cheaper alternative? :? Just break down and buy the dog gone winston already!!!

Joe, I want to get both. I'd like to get a decent trout rod because that's the rod I use most.
I want the 7 weight to use for bass...because I won't use it anywhere near as much, I don't want to spend a lot.

Go cheap on the 7wt and spend what you did on the big bertha for the rod you'll use the bulk of the time....

OK, you know I can't keep my big mouth shut.....
so since you asked...... :P
I think the 9' 7wt TFO Lefy Kreh would be a great choice for SMB and light salt. My Cabela's 10 ft 7 wt is too slow and sloppy for salt, but it seems OK for heavy nymphing, and will probably be OK for SMB.
If you're going to get a rod primarily for nymphing, and since you do so much fishing in the bigger water of the Housatonic, if I were you I think I might look for a 10 foot 6 or 7 weight. I think TFO has that configuration, as well as Redington. If you got a 10 foot 7 weight you could kill all three birds with one stone; longer, heavier nymphing rod, SMB, and light salt. The only drawback to a 7 weight as a trout rod is that I have found that fish under 15 inches are totally overgunned with my 7wt. But all the fish in the Hous are holdovers over 15 inches anyway, right? :P At least the ones that YOU catch.... :P
Just don't get the Cabela's Traditional. That rod doesn't want to cast enough line to fish the salt, especially with sinking lines or weighted flies. I'm gonna have to get a different 7 weight for salt, but I think my 7 wt will do for SMB and heavy nymphing. My primary purpose for buying that rod was for steelhead fishing in the Great Lakes region, and it should be fine for that purpose.
Just a few thoughts......

Dave,
I don't know what I've been thinking  .....
After further consideration regarding your quest for a new nymphing rod, I have found just the thing for you....
A cane pole.... the longer the better..... no reel..... which you can use to fish your bobber, sinker, and little brown fake worms with!!
:P  :D
