I picked up The hatch guide to New England streams by Thomas Ames. It has been helpful on the water, and in prepatation fro my trips out. I was wondering if there is a more comprehensive text out there that deals with the New England hatches, and gives more detailed accounts of insect biology/behavior in the rivers? Please let me know. Thanks, Kevin

I've only skimmed it, but isn't that more broad...North America?

A great book on hatches and their patterns is "Mayflies" by Ted Fauceglia. Covers Eastern and Midwestern hatches. But it only focuses on Mayflies. It's a must have bench reference.

Bugs of the same genus/species are essentially bugs, dude...

True, but western hatches and eastern hatches are quite different. Case in point... western Green Drakes are nothing at all like eastern Green Drakes..... and there are a number of other flies that are quite different.
But as you said, Joe, if you do your latin, genus and species will be the same from coast to coast. I'm not familiar with Hatches II, other than having heard of it......

Im no expert on it but the color variations is what Im thinking of...as far as tying patterns for the region.

Well cosider the source. Both Al Caucci and Bob Nastasi are from the east. So as they say on the mean streets of suburbia, "It's all relevant!"

As a fanatical flyfisherman and tyer, I have to say this is one of, if not the best, book to describe the various hatches and activity on the Farmington. While the fly tying section of the book is pretty straight forward, and of limited help in tying described patterns, the overall content of the book and it's straight forward descriptions of both general and species specific behavior is invaluable to the fly fisherman. If you really want to know the difference between individual hatch patterns of Mayflies, Caddis or Stoneflies, this is the book for you. I have read and re-read this book many many times and always seem to pick up a little nugget of info every time.
I would make this book essential reading for anyone fishing the Farmington with a fly....[/i]
