I’ll be first to post to this forum and hope this is the appropriate place for my posting.
As you all know a floating liquefied natural gas (methane) facility has been proposed for construction in the middle of Long Island Sound. According to the New Haven Register, test drilling for a new gas pipeline to Long Island began this morning (5/23/06) in Branford harbor. Attorney General Blumenthal sued to stop the drilling but the decision handed down by the federal court was not favorable.
From what I’ve read, the proposed gas storage and processing factory will be 10 stories high, 1,200 feet long and 180 feet wide. Massive LNG container ships will move in and out of the sound creating both shipping and environmental hazards. I personally do not know what the ramifications of such a facility will do to our natural resources here in Connecticut. However, I am intelligent enough to know that such a facility would be devastating to our environment and to portions of our economy.
The company responsible for this proposal is a very powerful multinational conglomerate composed of TransCanada and Shell. They call themselves Broadwater. They're so powerful that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or (FERC) is rubber-stamping and approving all of their applications. The actions of FERC are irresponsible and their decisions can override those of the state of Connecticut. Broadwater and FERC are quietly beginning to do what they please with our natural resource regardless of what the people and local governments want.
The vast majority of residents in Connecticut and New York oppose the industrialization of one our nations greatest natural resources. Please join me in the fight against Broadwater and their proposal of industrializing Long Island Sound. I urge you to contact your state and federal representatives to make sure they don’t let Broadwater pirate OUR Long Island Sound.
As Edward R. Murrow would say- Good night and goodluck.
