Debate over Penobscot has plenty of angles
By John Holyoke

Atlantic salmon anglers in the Penobscot River Valley are a passionate, concerned bunch. When their home river was closed to fishing in 1999, they continued to soldier on, holding fund-raising activities and meetings and breakfasts and participating in programs designed to teach area schoolchildren more about a magnificent fish.
Unfortunately, they haven’t been allowed to fish the Penobscot during the spring months since 1999.
And unfortunately, it’s not likely to happen this year, either.
That became apparent — at least to me — on Thursday night, when the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission held a public hearing on a proposal that would reopen the river to salmon fishing in May.

There isn't a wild fish left in the Penobscot Atlantic salmon run at this point. Back in the 1980's the Maine Sea Run Salmon Commission turned down millions of Atlantic salmon parr from the salmon farming industry which had agreed to keep them no more than two generations from wild. One can only wonder if the salmon managers had been open minded what we would have had today.
P.S. It has come to my attention that the original deal included 20,000 Adult
pre spawning fish to be released into the salmon rivers to bolster natural reproduction. It was derailed by MSRSC. Last year there was a return of 1,000 fish. At millions of $ over what the salmon farming option would have cost. I don't know what to think.
