View Full Version : Nymphing Clinic with Rich Strolis-April 27th

After reading, take a clinic. I dont know about most of you guys and girls but I am a hands on learner. I can only gather so much from reading, although I do a great deal of it too. I am willing to give a free clinic, thats right free, to those interested. I have taught some over the years and usually keep them down to 4 hours. The clinic utilizes discussion time, and onstream time and is very open for suggestions and questions. The best way to learn the proper techniques and rigging comes from hands on instruction. If Flyaddict is cool with it, I will set up a list or any of you who are interested in it can PM me and we can set a date and what not. I dont want to break any rules so I will leave this up to the moderators on that. There really arent many secrets, there are no secret leaders or formulas for success, its very basic, alot of the principals of drag apply just in a different plane of the water column.

I think this would be a great chance to put some screen names with faces and have some fun to boot. Flyaddict, Fisherman and myself will work out the details, date time etc and throw that out there. I dont want to put a limit on the number of people interested, the more the merrier. Maybe we could make it a flyaddict conclave or something, hopefully we can make this work during the nicer weather, turn it into a cookout afterwards too. Just a thought.

Read Fishermans puffball nymphing article first and then see where that gets you, maybe we can get this all together. Let me know, would love to help anyone out with this.

Rich,

Count me in..... I've gotten alot of help on nymphing from Housy Dave and The Fisherman in the past, and I would be eager to learn from you, and others, as well. I'm of the belief that the more one learns, from many sources and many perspectives, the better. Take a little something from everyone, try alot of different tactics and techniques, and see what works best for each individual.

Thanks for offering to share your knowledge.

Jim

Jim,
No problem, Housy Dave took one of my clinics in the past and is a great guy. When I can figure out a date we will post something, What may work the best is all those interested brainstorm something that will work, ie day and time frame and we will take it from there.

Good luck teaching this guy anything WNP! I once tried to show him how to tuck cast and it went so bad that that he listed me as "others" who have instructed him on this thread. You better bring a full case of patience because Jimbo's so stubborn...

(crowd says):H-ow stubborn is he?

(Bad comic continues with):Jimbo's sooo stubborn that after ten minutes with him, you'll want to throw Dave H. in the water! Bah dump dump dump;)

(crowd boos feverishly)

(Bad comic ends his ill conceived act by vocally quivering the remaining duration his hopeful stage tenor to the crowd. Then after publicly recommending a meal consisting of premature beef, he goes to sleep)...

Good night Y'all!:D

I'm glad this has been settled and that everyone is so enthusiastic about it. (Really).

I agree with Rich, articles can be a wonderful learning tool, but there's nothing like hands on experience.

First.... Joe clearly needs a nap... this is what happens to people who work third shift... they get sleep deprived and start babbling nonsense... :p

Secondly.... maybe Joe's just not a very good teacher... ;) I learned alot from Steve and Dave, and it payed off.

Although I still don't like or agree with where Dave places his indicator. I think it's way too high and his nymphs drag the bottom. Can't argue with his results though.... but when I place my indicator that far from my split shot, all I hook is the bottom. When I move it closer, and my indicator floats the way it's supposed to, I catch fish.

That's why I say learn from everyone, try lots of things, and figure out what works for you.

Go to sleep Joe.....

;) :D

I like the humor, hey throw digs at me when you get a chance, a little stone breaking goes a long way and loosens up the crowd. At any rate here is the list I have so far, and I will start the list at 20. Doesnt mean we have to fill it, or thats the limiting number either. I will add and update this as people trickle in. And as I said before, you guys will have to come to a command decision on a definitive day and time.

Like I said before we could make quite the outing out of this too if we really want to, maybe we all pitch in and have a little cookout deal with this. More to follow.

Now that really stings man! "I get no respect, no respect at all I tell ya..."

If you want to guage the progress you've made in nymping vs the amount you have learned from "others", then you virtually make both Steve and Dave out to be incompetent instructors.:p Anyone who's ever fished with you can attest to the fact that it's not ineptitude on your part by any means, it's that uncanny curse you possess of overthinking things.**/

Oh btw Rich, if Jim's fishing upstream of you and you hear some extremely loud obscenites coming from his location, try your best not to laugh as you witness his indicator float past you a few seconds later. It'll happen often and just means that Jim found bottom...:D

How about the weekend after opening day? April 26th/27th....

Or the weekend before opening day, April 12th/13th?

I figure a Saturday or Sunday is best for most of us, but keep in mind that I work every other weekend, so my windows are cut in half.

May 3rd I'm scheduled to work, but am going to Florida for my nephew/godson's college graduation. The following weekend is Mothers Day.... I don't fish on Mothers Day weekend... I make myself available to SWMBO. It's a small sacrifice for all the other times I disappear to go fishing. ;) (If we did it that Saturday, 5/10, I could make that work.)

The next date after that would be May 17th/18th, but that's my weekend to work. The weekend after that is Memorial Day, May 24th/25th.

Rich, where can we meet for any "classroom" portion of the clinic? We could start at 8am with coffee and stuff, break at noon for sandwiches or something, and fish the afternoon.....

If we try to get too crazy with cookouts and stuff, that can become a real project. People have to bring and set up grills, coolers, cooking, then cleaning up.... a cookout is a cookout..... going fishing is going fishing.... trying to do both can become a tall order. You end up doing neither well...... I suggest we save the cookout for a weekend later in the year, like during Sulphurs. Then we could cook out early, clean up, and head out to fish in time for the evening rise......

Just some thoughts.....

Sorry for the late posts guys, just got home from work. I think I read somewhere about bringing others not from the site. I am fine with this if all of you are. The more the merrier. As for dates, I am trying to iron out some new details for this years FRAA river cleanup and may be unveiling something new and fresh that may get more people interested in helping out. (more to follow). The only sticking point is we usually schedule that cleanup the saturday after opening day. That sunday may work, but any other day is fine with me on the weekends. Maybe you all can come up with a good working date and we can make that work. Southpaw, I understand your concerns, this will happen I guarantee it, rain or shine.

Jim in terms of the classroom stuff, we can do that outside. Worse case scenario we utilize one of the pavilions at peoples. I personally would like to see a banner turnout, it would be good for everyone and I think that BBQ should be in the cards. Could become a yearly flyaddict event.

Hey people, on another note if you just want to come and feel like your nymphing skills are profficient, tag along anyway. We could use this outing as a meet and greet ordeal like Southpaw mentioned. I have no problem coordinating the event, and like I said before maybe we can make some sort of bbq out of the deal. It would be a great way to ring in the season, and possibly make this a yearly event.

I offered up my help last year when flyaddict was trying to organize a meet and greet, so the offer still stands......I'd be willing to help out w/ coordinating and organizing this thing.....If we get a handful of guys to commit to the coordination part, it could go very smoothly....If we all just show up and leave one guy to do all the preliminary legwork, it could turn into a nightmare....It'll be tough, because there isn't going to be 1 magical weekend where every single guy who wants to participate will be available, but let's make the best of it and try to come to a general agreement on a date that will suit the majority of the people interested....

Rich Strolis
01-29-2008, 11:23 AM
I have a grille and am willing to do some cooking if we decide on the bbq ordeal too. Like I said you guys tell me when and I will follow suit. Any and all help in that area will be much appreciated.

meet and greet ordeal

bbq ordeal

Gee, I really hope NONE of this turns out to be any kind of ordeal....:p;):D

An ordeal (defined by Webster's as "any extremely severe or trying experience") is the OPPOSITE of what I'm hoping for... :D

I'll contribute a five pound box of burgers, rolls, and condiments, to start the ball rolling.... we should come up with a sign up list... paper goods (plates, utensils, napkins, paper towels, cups), chips, side dishes like potato salad, pasta salad, sodas and non-alcoholic beverages (alcohol is prohibited in state parks and Rich may have to arrest us... ;) :D), so on and so forth....

But first we need a date.... anyone else have any feedback on the dates I mentioned above?

April 12/13

April 27

May 10 (Mothers Day weekend)

May 24/25 (Memorial Day weekend)

I tend to think March is a bit early and weather unpredictable.... and I'd hate to see this put off till June....

I'm open any weekend....Even the Saturday before Mother's Day.......Mother's Day is no good for obvious reasons.....Memorial weekend is probably not good, since most people go away......Also, if we don't want to do it too early in the season, we may want to wait until a few weeks after opening day to let some of the initial crowd madness die down......Just a few things to consider....

Saturday April 12th
}the week before opening day
Sunday April 13th

Sunday April 27th- the week after opening day

Saturday May 10th- the day before Mothers Day

(Skip Memorial Day.... not only do alot of people go away, there's alot of people on the river and in the parks.....)

Sunday June 8th

Saturday June 21st

Sunday June 22nd

Any of these dates can be made to work for me.... (but it's gonna cost me dearly if we do this Mothers Day weekend... ;) )

Those of us who have signed up need to chime in and help pick some possible dates until we can narrow this down.....

Saturday June 7th will not work for me, I am one of the 100 tyers at Clearwater Junction up in the Catskills that weekend. The event is put on by The Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and is quite a good time. If you google it you can check the site. Otherwise I would be willing to do that date, Sorry.

Hendrickson Nymphs should be on the menu on that date, good choice. I can think of only one obstacle. Hendrickson time tends to be the most crowded time of the year in the TMA. Finding open water for a large class might be difficult. Rich is that "Tips" recipe something you are willing to share? I love my tips.

I understand that particular time of year may be a heavy traffic time on the river. What we will do, is spend a great deal of time off the water, then I will probably limit my demonstration time to one area. When that is done, all attending can split off and try out what they learned elsewhere on the river and then we all meet up for eats. The closer we get to the date, the more concrete we will get on who brings what, and/or all those attending start chiming in periodically with what they would like to bring.

southpaw526
02-05-2008, 08:33 AM
Most definitely.....I totally agree......I wasn't expecting to go fishing arm in arm like a bunch of chicks at a nite club.......We all meet up for an hour or two, then split up and go fishing and meet up later in the day for some stories and eats....Some guys like fishing in pairs, some alone, and some in larger groups, so to each his own.......Maybe we can do it near one of the campgrounds in case some guys from out of state decide to make it out....I'm all for making it a Saturday morning to Sunday morning event.....If it's just a half day thing, it may discourage anyone form driving up from out of state.....April 27th is just fine w/ me as of right now, but sometimes I have to leave town last minute for business, so it's always tentative w/ my schedule.....As far as some good eats, I can do some skewerd mango shrimp w/ pineapple......I can't promise I can bring enough shrimp 20 hungry savages, so depending on the turnout, it may be first come first serve.....2 of my friends from NJ were thinking of paying me a visit sometime this Spring, so I may just have to coordinate their visit w/ this event......Now that we've set a date, it's starting to feel like it may really happen.....I'm stoked....

JohnT, you are both in. On the first page of this thread is a list that is continually growing. So far April 27th as listed in the Headline is our date. As we approach that day I will be generating a final list, and also a list of what people are bringing. I would expect the list to hit 30 people, we are at 23 as we speak. That being said we will probably meet at Mathis grove in the Peoples forest, so we will have a place to picnic after. Hey Rich...For some reason, I thought the 27th was a Saturday......I'll try, but Sundays are my relaxing at home days.....I've got friends coming up that Thursday night who are planning on staying up here all weekend, but they're leaving Sunday morning, and after entertaning them for 3 days, I don't think I'll be up for doing Sunday also.....Is it too late to change it to the 26th? Just asking......If it's too much of a hassle, don't make changes just for me....W/ everyone talking about having drinks and stuff, I automatically thought it was a Saturday.......For the record, I'm a lot more fun on Saturdays than Sundays.......LOL.....My buddies were looking forward to your clinic, because we though it was on Saturday....I may have to disappoint them.....Sunday morning, those guys will be in driving home mode, and probably won't want to stick around for the clinic.....Wow.....My excitement for this event just went way south......UGH!!!

Ray, bring what ever you feel comfortable fishing multiple flies, weight and an indicator with. I will have at least a half dozen different setups with me to show the pros and cons of each.

Southpaw, thats ok if you dont make it. No worries, family comes first in my book so dont sweat it. If things change you and your friends are more than welcome to attend. In a couple of weeks I want to the laundry list of food items together and what not, so everyone attending can get their ducks in a row. Keep checking back to this thread periodically.

Thanks

Hi, I am a new guy to this site but would love to attend this event. I have never fished the farmington and am looking forward meeting some fellow anglers over your way.

Teton, no secrets here, just methods to catch fish via nymphs. Rabid your in. Part of the deal is everyone will bring something for the festivities to follow. As the date nears all attending should check back on the thread.

Looks like we are going to have quite the turnout. We should start firming up the food and beverage lists in the weeks to come. I will have some correspondence for all attending to take with them, kind of like a cheat sheet to throw in the vest to help out streamside whenever you nymph. I was thinking we could kick this off at 9 am. That way we can fish for sometime after the presentation and then have plenty of time to relax and stuff our faces.

Seeing that the interest level is waning and it looks like I have a recent family obligation that day. Anyone opposed to changing the date?? I need some serious answers on this one guys. You come up with an alternative date.

A secondary date would be great. I just found out that I'm being dragged to an engagement party in New Jersey by my girlfriend on the planned get together date. I was quite upset about this because I've been looking forward to this clinic.

I just really need to switch the date because of a last minute family obligation. I was hoping we could all put our heads together on this one and come up with a new date. As I said before the only dates that will not work for me other than the 27th now, is the weekend of the 6th in June, and I believe everyone earlier had obligations for Memorial day weekend too. Lets see what we can come up with. Thanks

No worries, &%$# happens. Best way to get the discussion is to throw out two dates and get some feedback.

WNP

I agree with ZFisher let us know what two dates you would be available and I bet there will be a herd of people still interested. A little food and some beverages and good people to talk and BS about fishing would be great.

My two cents.http://www.flyaddict.com/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif

:(

4/27 is a really good date for me....

The weekend before (4/19 and 4/20) is opening weekend.... and I work till 3 both days....

The following weekend (5/3 and 5/4) I'll be in Florida for my nephew/godson's college graduation....

The following weekend I have a wedding on Saturday (5/10) and Sunday (5/11) is Mother's Day... I don't fish on Mother's Day.... bad kharma...... ;) (Rich, you'll see what I mean now that your wife is a mom... ;) )

The weekend after that (5/17 and 5/18) I work till 3....

The weekend after that (5/24 and 5/25) is Memorial day...

The weekend after that I work Saturday 5/31 till 3 and Sunday 6/1 we're going to Block Island......

The weekend after that is the weekend of June 6th....

Guess you gotta count me out bro.... good luck finding another date.....

Id appreciate a change in date as I have a "fill the boot" for autism event that day and was feeling guilty about missing it.

Pete, I've been quiet but my wife and I still have 4/27 on the calendar.

As for other dates, the later in the spring/summer the harder it gets. However, we will attempt to attend whichever date you settle on.

Well, I initially cancelled due to the fact that it was on a Sunday, so if you're looking to change the date, may I suggest the new date be on a Saturday.......Since people were talking about throwing back a few beers and stuff, I was thinking a Saturday is just a little better for that sort of thing (For me anyway..LOL)......That way, no one is thinking about work the next day....I don't know about the rest of you, but my job is very high stress, and I'm constantly dealing w/ major deadlines, so although Sunday is still technically the weekend, I'm typically already thinking about work by Sunday afternoon...I find it difficult to be laid back on Sundays after I get my gardeining done in the AM.....Does anyone else agree w/ me? I'm actually a little stoked that the date is going to change, because I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to attend on the initially set date....Please tell me most people are in favor of a Saturday instead of a Sunday....I know some of you were looking forward to having some of that Mango/pineapple shrimp, so if you make it happen on a Saturday, there will be some happy tastebuds....

I am glad you are considering changing the date. I was blowing off an event that I really felt guilty about. The only date I would like to avoid would be 6/21, but thats just me.
