View Full Version : Nymphing: location, location, location

There's been a lot of discussion on the boards about solving the mysteries of nymphing. While rigging and presentation are important, I'd like to also remind those trying to master the art that WHERE you nymph is at least as important as HOW you nymph. Case in point, last night on the Salmon River:

There are six of us fishing the run below the HC Pool. Two of us are nymphing: myself and the fellow above me. Although we are using the same flies and shortline nymphing with an indicator, and are separated by no more than 40 feet, he is hooking fish at a 6:1 ratio to me. Why? He's gotten into a part of the run that is holding a lot more fish (faster, oxygenated water with better cover for feeding). In this particular stretch, where he is is always the first place I go.

Location, location, location.

Yeah, well. Irritating even more people posting on this board than I have already........
"fishing the run below the HC pool".

Yes, that's right. The fish liked that spot at that particular time.
They probably felt nostalgic for the outflow from the hatchery pump, where the food pellets tended to swirl after being dumped in.

Fisherman, I've probably killed your thread. But....
Et Tu, Fisherman?

I don't know what I've done to annoy you, treehooker, but the tone of your post makes me think you'd be happier posting on another forum.

Could it be that Tree Hooker is annoyed that The Fisherman revealed a location, by discussing "the run below the HC pool"?

If so, I wouldn't sweat that, TH. It's certainly no secret...... that's like talking about Church Pool....

I'd seriously like to hear and understand what the problem is..... :?:

Fisherman, YOU didn't do anything to annoy me, and I'm sorry it sounded like you did, because you obviously love the sport and invest a lot of thought in it. I've always found what you said informative and intelligent. I guess I owe you an explanation, though I can hardly articulate it.

It was about the "location" you cited.

I have negative feelings about how people treat that particular spot on the Salmon River based on past observations. I won't go into that, but I'll bet there are others here, too, who might but won't.

It was like my reaction to Flyaddict's post about fishing in Alaska, treating the fish as a "resource" rather than as other animals deserving respect. And the way I reacted to "playing football" with fish in Pete's post about the Farmington.

I must ask...have any of you ever seen anyone confined to a wheelchair fishing that Handicapped Area?

But its my problem, and not yours, and I shouldn't have put it in your face when you were just making a point . And you're right, I shouldn't be posting. Not just here, but anywhere.

You guys are all great, and I wish you all tight lines. I hope to meet some of you on stream some time.

Treehooker,

It sounds to me like you just have a very profound respect for nature as a whole and no one can fault you for that. I think most everyone on this forum has a good deal of respect for each other and nature in general based on the posts I see. I think it would a be a real loss if you stop posting. I have always found your posts to be informative just like Fisherman's.

Give it another shot!

You are aloud your opinions. I don't have a problem with it. Just no bashing members. :) We have close to 300 members on the forum and EVERYONE has an opinion.

Well, if this was all just a simple misunderstanding, then we're all good. :D I wasn't sure how to respond, and I probably should have taken it offline.

And I second Flyaddict's post. Opinions are good. Colorful posts are good. Let's just be sure to keep this site a flame-free zone and a safe haven for fly aficionados.

:D In answer to treehooker's question, Yes I have seen a few happy wheelchair users in that area of the Salmon river. And I have seen other people without cheelchairs but equally in need of those ramps in order to flyfish. And I would bet my substantial fortune(LOL) that anyone fishing in that area would immediately move from there if a person in a wheelchair arrived. It has been my pleasure to talk to a few people confined to wheelchairs who are thrilled to have that access.
