View Full Version : Casting practice video

I occasionally film myself practicing my casting if I'm trying to diagnose problems. Since I've been playing with posting videos, I edited a recent casting session and posted it here (click on Casting practice II):

It's not an exciting video (it's only a fragment of a much longer video), but I'm still learning the editing and posting process. I'll try to get some better casting video, with some slow motion, when I get the time.

By the way, if you've never done this (filmed yourself casting, that is), I recommend it as a part of practice. On this day, it was very windy, so I was trying different techniques. It was clear from the videos that my casts were better into the wind than with the wind, which seems counterintuitive until you see what sudden, strong gusts do to a backcast!

Well, I will admit I DID get skunked on that trip.

If I had a dime for everybody who says to me, when I'm out casting on grass, "Catch anything? Ha ha ha!" I'd be a very rich man.

They seem to think they're always the first person to make that joke...

There is something quite insane about watching this, but very enjoyable/instructional, I'm sure.

Ha ha! It's like watching the "game tape" afterwards. Don't you cricket players do that also?

Seriously though, head to a crowded saltwater spot and watch 20 guys casting. Odds are good that 80% of them are in serious need of some practice!

I agree - you see some shockers. I thought your casting was very good. I take it that was the double haul - something I've not yet tried, but surely will.

Cheers

ps. I'm more a "soccer" fan

I haven't tried recording my cast yet but it did wonders for my golf swing. I'll have to give it a whirl to see for myself what awkward really looks like. :D

And I thought I was the only one who practiced on the lawn... ;)

I too thought it was a pretty good cast Andrew. And the idea of videoing yourself to learn from it seems pretty sound. Good job!

Thanks. I used to practice about three times a week, 20 minutes each time, and it did wonders for my casting. Now I don't have such easy access to a park, and I fish more, so my casting has suffered somewhat. I'm fishing huge flies these days, so I have been trying to work out some kinks.

I still maintain that regular practice with short sessions will do much more for one's casting (distance or accuracy) than spending more money on a rod.

How many brown dog trout did you catch LOL :p
I find myself doing a bit of lawncasting, live next to the high school soccer field, distance casting with a 10wt is lots of fun!

They HAVE heard it, thankfully, and that's why many of them make very good, but inexpensive rods, for those of us who can't afford an expensive one!
