I just finished reading Paul Schullery's book on the history of American fly fishing. This is an older book (published in 1987, I believe), so I'm sure many of you have read it. Very interesting and lots of neat pictures (although the quality of the pictures could be better).

What is very clear from this book, and what I suspect most of us know deep down if we're being honest, is that the various debates that often crop up on this site about what is or is not fly fishing, what's better, more sporting, more traditional, or whatever, are debates that have been going on since the before fly fishing was even called fly fishing. And they didn't resolve them then, after a few hundred years of trying. And while there are certainly some very influential people in the history of the sport, there is no "single authority", meaning there's really little point in appealing to a given pioneer as having the final word on any particular issue.

Now, I'm not suggesting that those who want to shouldn't jump right into those discussions each and every time they pop up, but just remember that if you do so thinking that somehow the issue will be resolved, you're likely to be disappointed (or, in the rare case that you DO resolve it, you will make fly fishing history! Good luck.)

I suggest we tackle deeper questions, which can be resolved, such as: Which is better, apple pie or cherry pie? (Cherry, hands down. End of discussion.). Which is better, up, or down? Standard or miniature poodle? Left or right? Mini marshmallows or big marshmallows? Carbon 13, or carbon 14? Incisors, or molars?

I didn't say that ALL cherry pie is better than ALL apple pie. What I'm saying is that the best cherry pie is always better than the best apple pie. On that, there really is no debate.

JohnT's comment about carbon 14....I loved it. Very funny.

Cherry? Haven't you ever heard the expression "as American as apple pie"? After reading this, I can only ask, "Andrew, Why do you hate America"? http://floridasportsman.com/art/patriot.gif

*Pumpkin gets my vote, too.

*Sam Adams Octoberfest is the hands down best beer!

*And why is the Spelling Bee on ESPN? It's not sport. The only thing those kids get out of gym class are wedgies.

Hey Whip....The same reason NASCAR, billiards, and poker are on ESPN.....Not enough sports to do 24 hr coverage....To be honest, I don't even think baseball is a sport....If A guy that looks like David Wells can play it well at a professional level, then it shouldn't be called a sport. As a matter of fact, they should use David Wells as the gauge to determine whether any activity is a sport or a game. Anytime something comes into question, let David play it, and if he can play it, then it should not be on a sports network....Don't get me wrong guys....I love billiards and poker, but they are not sports.....Also (And this may draw some ire from the fellow membership), I love fishing - NOT A SPORT!!!....There are outdoor lifestyle networks if you want to watch fishing shows...Get it off ESPN!!!!...

Hunting, fishing, and falconry are true sports

All those other things (football, basketball, hockey,....) are games

Just sayin'

Hey Southpaw...very correct. All sports are competition but not all competitions are sport. I'm a gym teacher and in college, I had this arguement with a cheerleader about that being a sport. I was all like "Cheerleading is most definitely a sport" and she was all up in my face with "No it ain't." (Come to think of it, those roles may have been reversed.)

So everyone agrees that Sam Adams Octoberfest is the best, huh? Good. :)

Cheerleading is a sport. It requires physically exertion and fitness. Let's put it to the David Wells test......Yup.....It's a sport. Falconry is most certainly not a sport. I can picture David Wells doing that....
