I am currently in the middle of What The Trout Said. I forget the authors name since i do not have the book beside me at the moment but I find it very informative, bringing up topics which I had never taken into consideration. Its given me a better understanding of how I should analyze my settings, my gear, and the trout I am trying to catch.

This sounds vague but hopefully more discussion about the book will bring out its qualities.

anyone else read this book and care to share their take on it?

wow I would have never thought that book would cost over 30 bucks on-line. I picked mine up at the local library but even at that price I'm thinking about buying it. I didn't realize fly fishing books were expensive until I tried to get a copy of the cory and nastazi book. I am completely spelling there names wrong right now but I'm sure ya'll know what I'm talking about. Its all about nymph and stone fly identification it will guide you to the right insect by certain visual features. But that book opened my eyes to how much out of print books can go for. i still need to pick that one up.

Mike,
If you can find it Hatches II is around $49.00 and has updated info from the original. If you want one good entomology book I would recommend Aquatic Insect by Patrick McCaferty it covers all types of aquatic insect. It would be the # 1 book for anyone who wants to seriously learn about the bugs we imitate. Also Mayflys by Malcolm Knopp and Robert Cormier is even better than hatches as it give many many patterns for each stage of the hatch. Hope this helps.

Mike: I'm glad you're profiting from Datus Proper's book. It was the first book on fly design I read, and is probably the best. It is original, well-reasoned and contrarian, especially for it's time. I re-read it every three years of so and always seem to discover new insights. I'm glad you've brought it to the attention of this Forum.
