For tying, videos are a great aid. Use YouTube. There are hundreds of lessons from beginner to expert. Many many patterns can be found. The Catching-Shadows website also has some very good videos on how to tie effective mayfly and caddis nymph patterns (And he's a FlyAddict). Books are a great tool, especially when you can borrow them for free, but seeing it done eliminates a lot of trial and error.
