Does anyone have any good patterns for early season grey and black stoneflies?
Thanks

I've always had good luck with the CDC pattern tied the same way as a caddis. Works for me in grey or black
dry fly hook -18-20
thread - grey or black
body- grey or black beaver
wing- CDC grey or black
Just tie in the wing the same as you would for an elk hair caddis. Fished a grey one at the Farmington and they couldn't get enough of them...actually ran out and just stood there looking silly at the fish rising.
good luck !!

What worked for me was to use a size 16 Chocolate Dun. Imitates the early season Paraleps. The fish prefer them to the stoneflies. Usually works . I can't believe I remembered the name of the insect . I'm so tuned into saltwater flyfishing. Still like taking a fish on a dry fly.

I have had good luck fishing size 16-18 Humpy tied in the appropriate colors when there is fast water...they are almost impossible to sink. I also have a nameless pattern as follows:
-Deerhair body
-Turkey wing for a wing
-Hackling for legs
-Moose mane for antennae
