i would not mind starting off the new year with a striper and a cigar. i have done it in the past at the farmy for trout, but i think this year i want to try for a striper. i am putting it out there if anyone is interested.

January 1, 2007. It was a warm rainy day. I went out in the fog and spent two hours in complete solitude catching bass after bass.

ok. hopefully the weather does cooperate, i haven't looked at the tides yet. we may have a tentative plan here.

The real issue isn't the tide predictions, but the hangover predictions

5:00 cold sweats and shakes
8:00 smash alarm against wall
8:01 pass out
10:00 begin long painful journey to coffee maker
10:15 arrive at kitchen, run back to bathroom
10:30 attempt to operate coffee maker
11:00 collapse on couch
11:01 think really hard about fishing
11:02 wonder where gear last got put away
11:03 nap
11:45 warm up untouched coffee and attempt to swallow Advil
12:00 double up on Advil
12:04 nap
13:00 stumble through basement to find gear
13:45 depart to fish
14:08 high tide, start rigging
14:30 nap
15:00 begin fishing
15:15 violent shakes return. Possible benefit from realistic movement of 'wounded baitfish' retrieve.

Sounds like fun to me!

In terms of highest temperatures of the day, generally convenient times and the lower Hous location, the tides are unfavorable.

12-16-2008, 01:04 PM
Low or in-coming tide at noon then would be favorable?

The Fisherman

Ideally for me dead low on Jan 1 would be somewhere between 2-3pm.

That's not to say you can't catch fish at unideal times and tides. ;-)

Classic stuff Charlie! Make the most of Hogmanay this year chum, you're on borrowed time! ;-)

For the same reason, I'll be in bed by 10pm. So fishing the 1st of the year sounds sweet......small streams for me I think.

Hi Trouter,

I would be game for an outing (if the temp isn't too brutal). It looks like high tide would be @ 215PM @ Sniffens point. So I would think that 415ish would be a perfect tide and the sun would be going down at that time.

So who else might be game, it looks like Charlie is already making plans!!!

Merry Christmas to all.

Best regards,
Jamie

depending on what the temps look like, it might need to be a "heat of the day" endeavor. the tides do not look great down at the lower hous, that is for sure. i am sure this current cold snap is not heelping matters.

i am not sure if this venture will pan out. the forecast is calling for a chilly day on thursday. i went down to the lower hous on sunday for about an hour. the wind was pretty fierce and i only managed one hook up....which i dropped.
thoughts on thursday?

I'm probably out for lower Hous.

I can think of other spots we could fish as a backup plan. This would mean fishing after dark so there will be plenty of time to recover from those hangovers.

sounds like there might be some potential still. i for one am hoping for not too large of a hangover this year. they were easier to handle 10 yrs ago.

Went to that spot last night. One small shad to show for it. But in all honesty, the tides were not good. I prefer to fish this spot early in the outgoing, like as soon as the tide starts to pull out. We were there about two hours before low.

I was also thinking about the Thames River over the weekend. I have very limited experience on that river.

With temps tomorrow in the 20s, winds 20-30, a new bench full of fly tying stuff and a full slate of college bowls, the only outside I'm going to see tomorrow will be when I clear driveway. ;-)

Then, there's the weekend....

Sat and Sun will both be in the low 30's but Sun will not have much wind. Sun 12-4 on the Farmy could be a possibility.

is there a plan for tonight or does fishing need to wait a day or two?

Tides will be better tomorrow or Saturday.

sounds good, let me know.

Saturday will actually be the best tide. High tide is at 4PM and we want to be there about 5PM. It is jetty fishing early in the outgoing. Right as the tide begins to pull out there are bass feeding up against the rocks. Once the tide drops too much it gets very shallow and the fish often disappear.

Weather is not going to be an issue. Just dress warm because it will be in the low 20's.

I also might hit the Housy for an hour or two this afternoon. Not much hope of catching anything, but you never know.

Looking at the river flows - Salt is looking a bit more favorable, even in the dark.
Mind if I tag along?

I don't know if anyone got out on the 1st or not, but for my own "report", let's just say...

Mission accomplished! (the hangover at least)
