- Fish more saltwater than fresh, hopefully the gas prices will remain low.
- Really learn striper fishing.
- Catch a keeper :)
For freshwater
- Pick a new (to me) section of the Farmington and learn it well.
- Fish a few of those little streams I drive by all too often.
Waders, boots, rods, reels and flies will remain in the car for that quick impromptu outing.

For me, 2009 is going to be dedicated to losing 30 pounds, getting back in shape, working overtime, paying bills, saving some money, and becoming more productive around the house.... I have projects and chores that have been neglected year after year, so I could go fishing instead..... time to pay the piper.
I still hope to fish..... but I'm not making goals..... I'll fish when I can, where I can, and not put any pressure on myself to do anything special..... I only have about six days per month that I could even theoretically fish the salt, so it's a hit and miss proposition, often not worth the time and effort for me, given the dynamics of conditions and weather..... the Farmington is close and easy for me, even on a work night.... I can't fish till 10 or 11, drive home an hour or two, and get up to go to work at 5:30. I'm too old for that crap......
In 2009, fishing will definitely be taking a back seat to other more important priorities.
That's life......

For something like 15 years I've been jokingly saying that I'd like to catch the state record pumpkinseed
I think I might actually put some effort into it this year

i hope to reverse my trend of fishing less and less each year....
although i may be waiting for retirement for that.
i hope to learn a new trout stream or two and mostly do a lot of saltwater fishing.

Welcome to the site. You'll find there are some real nice guys here. Don't be afraid to get out there and fish. You'll learn quickly, I'm sure.
(OK - this is where the little smiley is supposed to go that says "Hey, I'm just yankin' your chain. How have you been?" But, I can't seem to get that smiley to show up.)

I have several.
Catch a striper on a floating line from the shore with a fly I tied for 12 consecutive months.
Continue to explore and learn the nuances of presenting with a floating line in the salt.
Teach myself traditional wet fly fishing techniques for trout.
Become a better fly tyer.
Hook and land a steelhead. Or two. Or more.
Fish between 75-100 days.
Do more writing.
Fish more on the Farmy.
Those oughta keep me plenty busy. ;-)

96 months ago a good friend and I decided to see how long we could catch least one trout a month today we both celebrated our 97 consecutive month. Not only has this gotten us out when most would stay in we have become much better fisherman as a result. Not catching fish move, not catching fish ty on new fly, 10 degrees out no fish yet.....gotta go out. It has been alot of fun. Last we changed it to increase it by one fish per month. This year 3 fish a month, next year 4 and so on, all to get us out on the water as much as possible. We'll gotta go only got one so far.......
My number one priority is to take at least one atlantic salmon trip this year.
Other than that, more striper fishing would be nice, but the salmon is the really important one for me.

Had to postpone our Arizona trip to 2010, so no first Apache Trout for me in 2009 on a fly.
Looks like it will have to be wild rainbows & browns or native brookies at Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia. Should be a great place to fish:

Enjoy fishing & life everyday.

I'd like to continue to fish with folks from this site. I'll fish the Hammonasset more. I'll travel further to fish more remote CT streams, particulalrly the Class 1s. I hope to start tying my own flies, but I say that every year....
Overall, I'll be more 'organized' to fish the salt. If and when things slow down in CT, I'll head east earlier without flogging a dead horse here. The Ocean State is only an hour away, after all. I will explore it more in 2009.
Tight lines all.

I haven't posted for a real long time on this forum, since early 2008 I think. My last post might have been my goals for 2008, oh well its a new year.
- Practice my tying, and build up a large inventory during the winter months to be ready for the summer. (This is already started, and the spare fly boxes are getting filled slowly but steadily).
- Fish more often, especially the TMA's locally that hold wild trout, never had more fun than crawling around one TMA looking for fingerling trout.
- Acquire a bamboo rod. I know Andrew Manchester has a fine repuation, and I would love to have a little rod for the streams around here, perhaps I will even foray into bamboo rod crafting.
- Contribute more to this site. I have a digital camera, some free time this summer, and should be able to give others the pleasure they give me when I look at some of their pictures, nothing motivates me more to fish than beautiful pictures of trout.
Those are my goals, hope I can do a better job than last year.

1) Become a better at tying
2) Really learn the hatches of the Farmington and the insects' life cycles
3) Watch the water for a good 10 minutes before wading in
4) Fish more streamers
5) Fish with more people from Flyaddict
Its funny how this lists gets bigger as you type.
Mike
Gain 30 lbs., Catch fewer fish, Tie fewer flys, make less money, I'm hoping it's true that 9 of 10 resolutions are not kept.

2009 Fishing Goals...
- Make at least 2 multi day trips down to the Farmington
- Learn about some of freshwater options that apparently are in abundance up here in Maine (although the Farmington is as about a far of a drive in many cases...therein lies the problem)
- Get after some stripers. Apparently the mid-coast area of Maine is world class and I'm just being stubborn/cheap.
Fish Grand Lake Stream in Maine the last week that it is open in the fall for some real nice LL Salmon or the Kennebec river in the Bingham area for some great wild rainbows.

Apparently you didn't miss much, at least this past season
From all the reports that I read, the stripers made a poor showing that far north
...maybe this year will be better

Engage in less and less forum banter, and create some new flies....

Nice thread......every year I try to achieve fly fishing goals. In the past I've promised to do things such as fish a particular river more, target American Shad on the lower Hous during the month of May, or fish new rivers that I've never fished before. This year though, my goals aren't so much about fishing, as they are about fishing with friends - close ones, new ones, & old ones. As I look back, my most memorable and enjoyable experiences involved them all. Also going to get my wife out fishing more. And, I'm purchasing a kayak this spring. Looking forward to making new friends in what that brings. Also just hoping that all my fishing friends are happy, healthy, and that I get out with each one of them at least one time this year. Tight Lines. Paul

My goals seem to be consistent year-after-year:
1) Get out fishing with the boys more, even if it's just them tagging along. Build their appreciation for the outdoors.
2) Fish saltwater five times, perhaps even catch a few fish.
3) Fish more local streams -- those meandering blue lines on topo maps
3) Welcome E.R. back from Iraq and fish either the Gaspe for large Brookies or head out west to fish a big river with him.

I'm going to have to say just get out and enjoy myself...nothing new or special. I'm thankful to be near some great water and just being able to fish as much as I do. I keep thinking and waiting for the day I'm bored of it...but it hasn't happened. Winter is a enough of a break even if I do get on the water a couple times to chase winter caddis.
Okay, here is one. Every 3 years or so we head to Norway the end of June to visit with family for 3 weeks. This is the year - I hope to actually catch an Atlantic Salmon on the River Otra. The last 2 times left me empty handed.
Maybe look into a Spey rod.

Fish more small streams. Do more streamer fishing on the Farmington. Remember to bring a large plastic bag to pick up streamside trash.

Well, don't feel too bad. Between January's non-existent stripers and high discolored water, I still haven't caught a fish this year. :-(
