I tie and use the ubiquitous (did I spell that right) antron spinner and it works great. Still, regardless of the gook and Frog Fanny I put on, they tend to get water logged and more difficult to see in the waning hours of the evening. Does anybody have any good spinner alternatives that don't sink as readily?
Thanks!
Sy

Hey Sy. I tie most of my spinner patterns using hackle. I tie in and wrap the hackle just as I would for a 'traditional' dry fly and then trim the center fibers on top and bottom...leaving a spent wing. Floats great and easy to adapt to any yarn wing pattern. For visibility just put a dot of white or yellow paint in where you clipped the top of the hackle.

take a look at the only fly tying demo we have so far on flyaddict.com. It is a hackle wing spinner with razor foam as the thorax. I tie it with a bright yellow razor foam for the thorax. It is easy to see and the fish love it.

This looks great! Anybody want to buy some cheap antron spinners!
Thanks!

Sy,
don't abandon the antron spinner. Put them back into your vice and tie in the same yellow razor foam thorax Flyaddict spoke of. You have turned them into a much better fly, I find that if the fish are beinf selective the spinners that float lower in the surface film seem to do better tah the higher riding ones. They are harder to see as it gets dark but with my crappy eyes i have trouble seeing anything smaller than size 18 dry. this has lead me to estimate the location of my fly and set the hook when there is a rise were teh fly should be works about 95% of time.

Better yet, a friendly fisherman the other day showed me a rusty wet fly (just rusty dubbing and a wet fly hackle), which worked great for me yeserday during the evening spinner fall. I didn't even have to see the fly. The trout took it aggressively and set the hook themselves most of the time. Also worked great for my buddy who's a newbie to fly fishing.

Spinners don't float forever and duns don't always float with their wings upright...success can be found in imperfection!
