The Hungry Trout Motor Inn on state Route 86 in Wilmington was seriously damaged by a fire Monday night.
"The fire originated in the basement of the hotel, which made it extremely difficult to access," Wilmington Fire Chief Randy Preston said this morning.
Preston said the center section of the motel, which is a separate building from the restaurant of the same name, was burned. Preston said the fire department received the call just before 10 p.m., and volunteers were at the scene until 3 a.m.
"It was single-digit temperatures, and it was extremely hard to fight because it was in the basement," Preston said. "We had to cut holes through the floors to access the fire."
Preston said two of the motel rooms were occupied, but everyone made it out safely. At the peak, there were 50 volunteers at the scene, with crews from Upper Jay, Jay and Lake Placid providing mutual aid. The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department responded with one truck and 21 members at 10:28 p.m. and stayed until 12:38 a.m.
Preston said the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental but is still under investigation.
