Making my annual trip out west. I always carry on my travel rod but this year I have a new rod/reel case for my travel rods. Has anyone had a problem with carrying on reel on rod cases ? I wouldn't want the airlines to think I'm going to strangle someone with my fly line. You never know . I'm flying Delta.

I have not used Delta with FF gear however, it all depends upon the individual airline and the TSA airport screeners. You cannot depend upon another travelers experience/recommendation.

Many have stated that the airport TSA will not allow fly lines (reels) as carry-on.

My suggestion is to mail the gear out to a fly shop or friend via USPS or DHL/Fedex (not UPS) and call to confirm it has arrived prior to travel.

I have customers who have stated that they were prevented from carrying on reels because of flyline. Also aluminum tubes of any length have been flagged for some because of their possible use as bats. I have risked carrying the reels on because I want them to make it there with me. Rods ,I usually put inside my regular luggage.

I recently flew Delta from Bradley to Salt lake city. I carried on my rod and reel case. It is for a 2 piece 9ft. rod. I think it is about five feet long. It fit easily into the overhead compartment. There was no problem either way. Have fun, it is beautiful out there. Be sure to tie some spent caddis for late evening.
