Depends on the model. I own a XP 9ft 5wt and it a rocket. Great rod but pricey. I know in the past their lower end rods weren't that great, from what i heard they revamped those lines and supposedely they have gotten much better.

I have a 486 SP bought in 2000 or 2001 and really like it. Sage discontiinued the SP model at that time (I think replaced by XP) and I got it at a substantial discount (which never seems to happen with Sage). Admittedly, I have NOT cast many other rods so I don't have a solid comparative reference base - which is why I posed the question.

I have a Sage 389-4 Light Line that I absolutely love! I understand the VPS light is basically the Light Line, and, having cast a 590 VPS Light I can say it felt very similar to the Light Line I have. Anyway, the VPS and VPS Light have been discontinued, a while back, but some are still available at fair discounts, just gotta search for them online.

I just (yesterday) bought a Sage 590-4 XP at 30% off, and fished it last night on the Housy, for smallmouth. Casting a heavily weighted wooly worm was a piece of cake for the XP, and later, I tied on a size 12 White Wulff, and the XP again cast like magic. Plenty of zip, as expected, but it also has a pretty sensitive tip. The XP is definitely not just a stiff rod, I love it, and this is from a guy who also has a 9' 5wt Winston WT, that I also love.

I picked up the XP at Housatonic Outfitters, they had a couple of other XP's on sale at 30% off, including a 9 foot 4 wt, but no other 5 wts, i did not notice what the other XP's were.

Harold, at HRO, did not know if the XP was to be discontinued, just said the Sage rep told him he could discount them if he wanted to.

Are they discontinuing the XP?

Go to ebay and look at all the brand new XP's listed. That will tell you that they are discontinuing them.

Yep - I looked at Farmy's link to another forum and it surely suggests the XP replacement is right around the corner.... That would explain the discounting right now.
