So here's a cool pattern if I've ever seen one....
The Mohican Mayfly was created by Oliver Edwards to fish the Green Drake hatch across the pond. A couple of guys were tying these at Monday night tying at River & Riptide Anglers (Coventry, RI) last night. I didn't try to tie one then, but I managed to get it figured out today (after several false starts).
This is the first and only one I have tied so far. The Hex seemed like a good one to start with since it's huge. I'd like to try some smaller ones if/when I can find some thinner foam sheets (this one was tied w/2 mm). I also need some gel-spun thread in different colors (as well as foam in more muted colors...probably won't matter in the dark in this case). Any tips on what the smallest diameter gel spun is? A hook with a nice wide gape would be nice too. I tied this with an up eye. Maybe that little bit of space might help make a difference?
It's definitely not a quick tie...especially the first time around; lots of new & techniques for me to learn...but I can't imagine having to tie too many of 'em. This thing looks durable as heck. Pretty much all the feathers and hair are enclosed in a tomb of foam. You can tug the body HARD and it doesn't feel like it's gonna come off. That said, it's really flexible.
There's an article in the latest Fly Tyer about a similar fly, but it's not exactly the same. The one in the magazine looks more fragile than this one. I like how the wing on this one slants backwards and the parachute hackle doesn't stick out the front. I'm a big fan of foam, so that's a plus too. :)
