Any one out who flyfishes who had a recent hip replacement, maybe in the past year or two. I am told I need one by my doc who also does not think I should be doing this after surgery because of possible falls. I am trying to hold off until after salmon/steelhead season but I figure if I have it done around January - I should be good to go for my Beaverkill/Willowemoc trip in May. I know others who have had it done but these are all pretty sedate (more like comotose) people.

I had one done 5 years ago at age 61 and was back to work in NYC in 10 days. I had to take a Taxi Cab to & from work for the 1st week or two but after that I used the Bus and Subway.
Fly Fishing in 2-3 months after is not a problem as long as the wading is not "killer stuff". After 6 mos you'll even be able to do the "killer stuff".
About the only thing that I am wary about nowdays is jumping from one level to another ... like jumping off a rock 18" above the shore ... might just be mental but I like to avoid that kind of shock.
Good luck ... it's a pieceof cake.
Ken

Thanks for the response. That makes me feel a little better. I think my doctor is used to treating very old people. I am only 56 and I am not old by any means. The only thing is, I had planned for more than 10 days out of work - I was thinking more like 6-8 weeks.
Thanks again for the positive response.

From my own experience, and from others I have met, I don't think you will need more than 3 weeks away from work (although, that would surely depend on what kind of work one does).
Also forgot to mention; I now use a wading staff all the time ... just a security blanket I suppose but I've grown so used to it now that I would'nt even think of going without it. I'm sure it really has nothing to do with the hip replacement; probably more to do with age and that I never was very graceful in the first place.

Fortunately my boss is not a member of this site cause I have him convinced its 6-8 weeks. Hopefully he does not find out otherwise.
I have always use a wading staff not only for safety, just so I can move about faster.
Do you feel the cold more in your hip and could I ask who did your operation.

New hip feels same as original, but better; never notice the cold, but, like the old wives tail, when rain is coming I feel it in several of my arthritic old joints.
I'll have the 2nd hip done when it is ready (not that far away) and again it will be done by Dr. Roy Beebe of Avon.
