The Fisherman

The Supervisor is another classic streamer for trout and landlocked salmon. It gets its name from its creator, Saco, Maine game Warden Supervisor Joseph Stickney, who came up with it some time in the mid-1920s. (He also created the classic fly Warden's Worry, but that's another thread.) Like many streamers intended for Maine lakes, this is a smelt imitation, and it holds a position of great importance in Maine streamer fishing and fly tying.

Many years later, Ken Abrames took Warden Stickney's pattern and adapted it to a three-feather flatwing for stripers. This is a fine baitfish fly, and with its color scheme it could most definitely serve as a herring. But the most success I have ever had with this fly has been during the fall anchovy run. Using an R.L.S. Supervisor about 2.5" long, I used it to take dozens of stripers one memorable October night.
