I have seen a LOT of variability in the quality of CDC available - the recent purchase I made is quite inconsistent and I feel a bit cheated. Does anyone have a recommendation on a brand/location to find the highest quality? Internet recommendations welcomed (maybe even prefered) as well. Thanks in advance.

We are now carrying Renee Harrop's Trouthunter CDC at the store. There is much more in a pack for about the same money as other companies. The feather quality is exceptional.

I bought that trouthunter and the quality is much better than any other cdc i have purchased in the past. Most of the pack is very good quality.

Only buy CDC at a local fly shop. You're right, there is too much variablity in the feathers to trust this to an online purchase. Even the Rene Harrop stuff differs from pack to pack.

I do love the stuff and would tie all my flies with it, but it can be frustrating to get adequate supplies of good quality feathers. I have tons of little feathers just lying around.

I wish Whiting Farms would get into genetic CDC.

It would be awesome if they could pen raise ducks!

I've actually emailed Whiting Farms about that. I'll let you know if I hear from them

PS The best CDC I've ever gotten was packaged by Marc Petitjean. Some of the biggest CDC feathers I've ever seen. Alas, even his stuff differs significantly from package to package.

I have had good luck with Orvis CDC. I also like using the oiler puffs from hareline dubbin INC

Here's the reply I received from Tom Whiting regarding my inquiry to him about "genetic" CDC:"

Thank you for your e-mail regarding "genetic" CDC.
Actually we do have a CDC substitute, which is the Chickabou from our Brahma hen line. Our Japanese distributor has been buying it for years and selling it. The natural color is a soft gray.

Thank you for your interest.
Sincerely, Tom Whiting
