a splashy rise happens when a fish is taking an insect high in the water column just under the surface.
a subtle sip indicates the fish is feeding on something on top the surface.

any other pieces or thoughts?

I would recommend a google search on the topic. Lots of stuff out there. Porpoising trout, sipping trout, splashy trout, trout clearing the water...all are tells of what's going on.

Aside from book knowledge, personal experience will help. Like when you see fish exhibiting spinner rise forms but they're really eating sz 28 midges in the film...that one tripped me up for a good long time. ;-)
