I am having a problem with hackle that is too long. I have read several times how you tie longer hackle forward and then draw it back to make it shorter so that it fits the hook - or something like that. I guess I am just dense - I just don't get how you draw it back. Can someone explain in plain language or direct me to a site, book or article that shows how this can be done. 8)

Try using the distribution wrap method...basically you are deploying the soft hackle fibres of your choice around the hook shank in little bunches until you have wrapped a full collar. Since the fibres are cut from the stem, you control how long they are. Dick Talleur gives a very thorough explanation in any of his basic books. This method also allows you to use a wider variety of feathers for the collar. I like using mottled hen back fibres.
Hope that helps,

PS From your fishing reports it sounds like I should be asking you for help!

HT:
Thanks for that info about the soft hackle. I had thought of that and it is probably the way I will go. I also use hen back or partridge and some chukar for the dun color.
Yes, I have had an extremely good summer for number of fish and size - this just makes up for all the times (years) that I almost gave up.
