Overall with floating lines I haven't found any brand or model to be superior. If you fish alot as I do, they all last just a few months before cracking the outer surface. That being said, Dave at Classic and Custom has an off-brand for about $30 that is equal to any I've used. I'm sure Grady has something similar. It has been my experience that a very visible color is also helpful. It acts as an indicator if you don't like adding anything to your line. And, by the way, you seem to be very knowledgeable(is that a word) so I bet you already know all that. Also, swapping ends on a dt line really does extend the life of the line.

Actually ....she'll be using my old Orvis 7'6 silver label. Shes planning on bringing the reel to the flyfishing shows in the spring & trying out rods.

I see you are going with a double taper. I have all WF lines except for one 3 wgt double taper that I don't fish with (and a few intermediates and sinking). Curious what differences you (and others) have seen with DTs .... wondering if I should investigate them further ?

I like good old Cortland Peach for my 3 weight.I use it a lot in colder weather, and it handles very well. I have a Sage Quiet Taper in a WF on there now, and I don't like it as much. The rod I use it with is a Sage 379LL, which ain't exactly a fast rod. I don't know how that compares to the Orvis, but certain lines seemto betterwith certain rods.

Tony,
I'm not sure if I'm answering your question correctly, but a DT is better for role casting. The heavier line towards the center helps drive the line while rolling. You can't cast as far as a WF but I can still cast it far enough on most local rivers.
