My deepest apologies for the pun. Moving right along, here are a bunch of hybrid flatwing bucktails I tied up, based on the Crazy Menhaden. Abrames' original had 11 saddles; with the exception of the big one here (it has 8) these only use three saddles. Bucktail, tied like a Blonde behind the eye and at the tail end of the shank, provides the bulk of the color and content on the upper half of the fly, along with some flashabou accents. The beige and yellow bucktail throat and sides reman true to the original pattern.

Each fly uses bronze body braid and at least one each of white, yellow, and orange saddles. The other colors are pink, ginger, red, blue, chartreuse, olive, light green, and copper. The largest fly here is 12" long; the smallest, just a bit over 7".

I have had a lot of luck with this fly at night on our rivers here in Connecticut. I like to fish it on a greased line swing; and, failing a hit, letting it sit helplessly in the current below me. The hits are often spectacular.

And an even closer look. Perhaps the last thing a striper sees before he realizes he's hooked.
