Default Cape Cod July 17th - Kayaks - Stripers - Guide Steve Kean

I was out on Cape Cod last week with the family in which I only managed to get my fly rod out a few times. We were staying up in Eastham for the first time, and it is a good home base if want to chase fish, swim, Kayak on either side of the Cape. I had my Kayak with me so I set up to meet with Steve Kean who is a guide on the Cape. If you want a kayak fishing adventure, this is your man. We met up at 2:00am for launch on the bay side. It was important to get out on the higher end of the tide on the out going. At dead low you are stuck out there until the tide turns. Not a bad place to get stuck with a yak and Bass around.

I have heard many say you are too late at this time of summer but I have to say there were plenty of bass around. We didn't even paddle 20 minutes before we were hearing the familiar sounds of Stripers popping on the surface chasing sand Eels. It was dead calm so you could hear a mile away. Another good sign was the sound of birds in the middle of the night. We followed the birds until we found Bass. I had Stripers breaking next to the boat. Steve told me to hold off until we found a better concentration of Bass. The urge to cast is enough to kill a man.

We found a good spot to jump out and walk a bit. I no sooner hooked into a good fish and dropped it. The flats in this area just go on forever. Shallow channels where the water came off the bars and Bass were cruising up and down the flats.

The fish that came to hand were Schoolie size fish. I didn't break the 30 inch class this trip. At one point we were walking along a flat and I had my line dragging 20 feet behind me. Fish on! Funny. Once the morning came we slowly walked along often coming up on fish or seeing a swirl 30 feet off. I picked up one or two that way. In the last couple hours we spent a good amount of time along a bar as the tide came in. The water spilled over the bar bring bait and schools of fish. It was hard to see the fish at times but we would walk up on 2 fish, 4 fish, 10 fish, 14 fish just cruising along the bar. Steve's enthusiasm is clear. That excitement you get when you see fish, even after all his years of fishing. This is the kind of person you want to fish with.

After Block Island this year, that's certainly enough to kill a man. :-)

The main objective was vacationing with the family. I just got back from a week at Nags Head OBX a couple weeks ago. I was glad I couldn't fit the fly rod. It meant more time with my boys and my grandson Did see some nice sea trout caught by the Oregon Inlet. Love the sunrise shots.

These are some great pictures! Thanks for sharing. I am trying to plan a trip out there, and I would like to know if you have any good suggestions for me before I take my trip. Also, does anyone have good recommendations on great cape cod hotels for me to stay at with my family while I am out there? Thanks!
